Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of motivation and Maslow's hierarchy of needs in the film The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), which is based on the true story of Chris Gardner's struggles. The research method used is qualitative with a content analysis approach, through in-depth observation of film scenes that reflect Maslow's five levels of needs: physiological, safety, social, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The results of the analysis show that this film clearly illustrates how motivation functions as the main driver in fulfilling basic needs to achieve self-actualization, in line with self-determination theory, which emphasizes the importance of fulfilling psychological needs such as competence, autonomy, and relatedness. This study concludes that The Pursuit of Happyness is not only a medium of entertainment, but also a powerful visual representation of the resilience of human motivation in achieving well-being and success.
